NEVER STOP LEARNING
NASA STEM @ Home For Students
NASA’s journeys have propelled technological breakthroughs, pushed the frontiers of scientific research, and expanded our understanding of the universe. These accomplishments, and those to come, share a common genesis: education in science, technology, engineering, and math.
How Things Fly
Learn by doing! Discover for yourself the answers to things you’ve always wondered about flight. Explore wing shapes and other factors affecting lift in How Wings Work, design and make your own Paper Airplane, take the Distance Challenge, and see the Forces of Flight in action. You can even practice flying with the Controlled Flight simulator or by building a rocket in Rocket Lab.

Teach Engineering
The airplanes unit begins with a lesson on how airplanes create lift, which involves a discussion of air pressure and how wings use Bernoulli’s principle to change air pressure. Next, students explore the other three forces acting on airplanes—thrust, weight and drag. Following these lessons, students learn how airplanes are controlled and use paper airplanes to demonstrate these principles. The final lessons addresses societal and technological impacts that airplanes have had on our world. Students learn about different kinds of airplanes and then design and build their own balsa wood airplanes based on what they have learned.
NASA STEM Engagement
STEMonstrations are STEM demonstrations on the space station.
FLIGHTGEAR
FlightGear is an open-source flight simulator. It supports a variety of popular platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) and is developed by skilled volunteers from around the world. Source code for the entire project is available and licensed under the GNU General Public License.
GEO-FS
Playable for free, on any system that can run a modern web browser (yes it runs on Chromebooks!) and with simplified controls makes GeoFS the most accessible flight simulator around. This is why it is being used in education and training as an affordable and easily deployed solution. While simple, GeoFS’s flight model is complete enough to deliver a realistic flight simulation experience. More than just a game, GeoFS is a real flight simulator.
